பழ மொழி - (Old Saying) - முதுமொழிக் காஞ்சி - 5

5. அல்ல பத்து

 (“Not” 10 – This is the fifth set of 10 poems of the 100.)

ஆர்கலி உலகத்து மக்கட்கு எல்லாம் -

This is the starting line for each stanza that means "For all the people who are living in this world surrounded by seas"

1. நீர் அறிந்து ஒழுகாதாள் தாரம் அல்லள்.

Behaving without understanding a man’s nature is NOT a good wife. (This is probably in the border to be called as a MCP attitude. So let’s mitigate this. The revised quote should be “Behaving without understanding a spouse nature is NOT a good partner.) {Yes, I can hear many feminine voices thanking me heartily….Rags is taking a deep bow” J}

2. தாரம் மாணாதது வாழ்க்கை அன்று.

A life without family (Emphasis is on getting married and leading a family life instead of Live in relationships) is NOT a good life. I think this purely applicable to the ‘Grahasthaasrama”

3. ஈரம் அல்லாதது கிளை நட்பு அன்று.

An association without love is NEITHER friendship or relationship.

4. சோரக் கையன் சொல்மலை அல்லன்.

A miser is NEVER praised ever. (Because he would not offer his wealth to anyone)

5. நேரா நெஞ்சத்தோன் நட்டோன் அல்லன்.

People not agreeing with your basic values are NOT your friends. (Note, this is not about opinions but about values.)

6. நேராமல் கற்றது கல்வி அன்று.

A skill learnt without obeisance to the teacher (without offering respect, money, and help) is NOT an education at all.

7. வாழாமல் வருந்தியது வருத்தம் அன்று.

Jealousy about others betterment is NEVER your misery. I love this line and hence leaving the Tamil meaning below.

தான் வாழாமல் பிறர் வாழ்வதற்காக வருந்தியது வருத்தமன்று.

8. அறத்து ஆற்றின் ஈயாதது ஈகை அன்று.

Giving wealth earned through wrong means is NOT charity. (This line has disapproved Robinhood and all our bollywood, kollywood heros).

9. திறத்து ஆற்றின் நோலாதது நோன்பு அன்று.

It is NOT a penance if it does not match up to your ability. (One of the beauties in the literature is to leave it unquantified.)

10. மறு பிறப்பு அறியாதது மூப்பு அன்று.

It is NOT great to have reached old age without practicing deeds that will help you in the next life.
