SANSKRIT SAYINGS – 2 – FRIENDS AND RELATIVES

Among the worldly things, there is nothing more refreshing than hearing a fresh idea or a meaningful quote. While every language can boast of quotes and sayings, there is anything which beats Sanskrit in this. The terse quote, the sweet words, rhythmic sounds and above all the deep meaning in those sayings, takes it all.

Let’s look at few sayings on the topic of friends and relatives. I am picking some of the ones I liked and the first one is my favorite.

Saying 1:      This highlights the top 6 relatives that we should have.

सत्यम माता पिता ज्ञानं धर्मो भ्राता दया सखाह
शांतिः पत्नी क्षमा पुत्रः षडेतेह मम बान्धवाः
-- धर्मराज या युधिस्ठिर

"satyam mAtA pitA jnAnam, dharmo bhrAta dayA sakhA
sHAnti patni kSHamA pUtra, ShaDeteha mama bAndhavAH"

Truth as one's mother,
Knowledge as one's father,
Righteousness as one's brother,
Compassion as one's friend,
Peace as one's wife, (can be interpreted as patience also)
Forgiveness as one's son,
these six are one's closest relatives.

We all have many friends and we select some of them for specific activities.

Saying 2: This highlights our best friends for 4 of the important activities.

विद्या मित्रं प्रवासेषु भार्या मित्रं गृहेषु च ।
व्याधितस्यौषधं मित्रं धर्मो मित्रं मृतस्य च॥
"Vidya Mitram Pravaseshu, Bharya mitram Graheshu cha
Vyadhithsya aushadhim mitram Dharmo Mitram mrityusya cha"

When you are travelling, knowledge / education is your friend,
When you are in your house, your wife is your friend
During illness, medicines are the best friends
After death the Dharma which we did is our friend.

(Just on the lighter I want to highlight that your wife is not your best friend outside your house and even if she is travelling along with you. :) Don’t you agree?)

Saying 3: Father-in-law’s (FIL) house

It is very unusual to get quotes about father-in-law. The world is very unfair that not even a fraction of the attention that is given to the Mother-in-law is given to the poor father-in-law. But this quote does some justice and highlights the pride of FIL.

असारे खलु संसारे सारंश्वशुर मन्दिरम्।
हर : हिमालये शेते विष्णुश्शेते महोद धौ ।

Asaare khule samsaare saaram kusur mandhiram!
Haraha Himalaye shethe vishnur shethe Mahodhadau!!

In this meaningless world there is only one place that is worth to live in! That is the house of the FIL. Lord Shiva who married Parvati stays at Himalayas (Parvati is the daughter of Himalay – Parvata Raja). Lord Vishnu who married Goddess Lakshmi stays at the milky ocean. (Goddess Lakshmi was born in the milky ocean when it was churned and hence it her house).

Both Lord Shiva and Vishnu found it right to stay at their FIL place. Do you need any more proof?

Saying 4: Son, Lion & Donkey

How should a son be? Here the example of a lion’s Cub and donkey’s foal.

एकेनापि सुपुत्रेण सिंही स्वपिति निर्भयम् ।
सहैव दशभिः पुत्रैर्भारं वहति गर्दभी॥

Ekenaapi suputrena simhi svapiti nirbhayam!
Sahaiva Dashabihi putrair Bharam vahathi Ghardabhi!!

A lioness having only one cub relaxes as she is assured that her cub will bring her food through hunting. But the donkey even if having 10 foals will have to carry her loads herself.

Saying 5: Benign thought

Let me share this very benign thought as the last part for the blog.

paropakArArtham phalanti vRkSaH
paropakArArtham vahanti nadyaH
paropakArArtham dugdhanti gAvaH
paropakArArtham idam zarIram"

For others' benefit, the trees do bear fruits.
For the welfare of others, the rivers keep on flowing.
For the nourishment of others, cows pour out their milk.
So also, this human body is meant for the service of others.

There is one more quote on the same topic which is more powerful.
जीवने यावदादान स्यात प्रदान ततो अधिकं!
इत्येषा प्रर्थानास्माकम भगवन परिपूर्यताम!!
Jeevane yavadaadaan syaat pradhaan thathoadhikam!

Ityesha prarthana-smaakam Bhagavan paripooryathaatham!!

In the quote one pray to god that “Please do fulfill our expectation that in our lives whatever we give to others should be greater than whatever we borrow from others”.

May serving others be our greatest need!

Musings: I am me, my inflated Ego!

Please read my previous blog (Musings on Friendship before this @ http://ragsgopalan.blogspot.com/2009/05/my-best-friend-my-inflated-ego.html before reading this sequel / part 2.

What is a friend?
A friend is a farmer (tilling our barren mind) & a reformer
Sometimes as brother, sometimes as bouncer
Many times our banner, yet a fine balancer
Not like a master, yet a catalyst for the learner!
Above all for me a friend is a teacher!

Yes, my friend is a teacher helping me to learn the lessons of life!
Yes, my friend is a teacher helping me to learn the essence of life!

Just as I kept thinking, stranger things I am discovering!
Who is my best friend? Who teaches me the best lessons in life?

Who is my best friend?
I am me, I am my inflated ego!
My ego begets desire, desire begets discontentment!
My discontentment begets greed, greed begets possessiveness!
My possessiveness begets jealousy, jealousy begets anger!
My anger begets enemies, enemies beget rivalry!
My rivalries beget success, rivalries beget failures!

My rivalries beget success, success begets pride!
My pride fuels ego, Alas! Success fuels ego!

My rivalries beget failures, failures beget experience!
My experience begets lessons, lessons belittle my ego!

Yo! I have found a friend in my failures!
Yo! I have found a friend in my failures!

For failures begets lessons than a thousand wins!
A lesson in humility, a lesson in contentment
For failures,
Keeping me young and swift of foot!
Presenting me my scarce solitude!
Awarding me my austere aloofness!
Revealing to me my deathless courage!
Withering my laurels at Wuthering heights!
Allowing me to learn at my own pace!

In life,“Where am I?” is the product of my success
“What am I?” is the result of my failure
For I keen to know “What am I?” than ‘Where am I?”
I adore my failures, my inflated ego!
For failures spring from my inflated ego!
I am me, my inflated ego!

Hurrah! I have identified my best friend, in my inflated ego!
I am me, my inflated ego!

Musings on Friendship...

A true friendship is,
Hard to gain, Easy to sustain
Like an insurance in life for the good times to rain
Having a true partner in pain and gain
Avoiding a life that’s living in vain

In a true friendship,
It’s connecting to another ignoring the race
Living your life at your own pace
It’s not always the smile on the face
But it’s here & now, how both hearts embrace

For a true friendship,
I never think twice to pay any price
To beget a friend so wise,
Who always shuns his disgrace!
Yet prefers his than my disgrace!

For a bad friendship is
Easy to gain, Hard to sustain!
I shun the thoughts that depress my heart
He isn’t my friend at misfortune who depart
“Friends”, betraying me at the ruins brink
Burning my heart whenever I think
For a bad friendship is
Easy to gain, Hard to sustain!

In a true friendship,
It’s not just to pair up for easy deeds
But to hit and correct me when faults exceeds
A bond in amity is a liberty from bonds
For I can be “me” sans my “personality brands”

What is a friend?
A friend is a farmer & a reformer
Sometimes as brother, sometimes as bouncer
Many times our banner, yet a fine balancer
Not like a master, yet a catalyst for the learner!
Above all for me a friend is a teacher

Yes, my friend is a teacher helping me to learn the lessons of life!
Yes, my friend is a teacher helping me to learn the essence of life!

Happy reading!

PS:
1. Based on the feedback from my friends / regular blog visitors that the blogs are too long for their attention span, i have split this into 2 parts. The flow has not changed, but guess it accomodates the attention span.

2. If some of you are wondering that some concepts above are familiar (esp. those who have read Thirukural) then you are right, few lines are direct translation of the couplets in my own words.

For my eyes are jealous of my heart!

This small piece is self explanatory and can be considered as "Rumblings of a friend in solitude".

Time wounds all heels before
Time heals all wounds!
The former came uninvited
The latter is hiding unintended

A victim of her ego with
Silence as her shield
She locked herself in a cage
Despite being smart enough to recognize this stage

A victim of his ego!
Does not know where to go!
His exasperations so true
Alas, persuasion isn’t his virtue

Her shield is her weapon
A curse he bequeathed upon
Her weapon so sharp
Making it a no exit trap!

A life so ecstatic
Shattered by a silence so static
A frozen friendship so artic
With the chillness of Antarctic

How do I explain that? Never
post the opera, behave like a black spider!
Climbing the height of conceit, wont make you a winner!
For I am a tree lover despite being a wood pecker!!

She has been close to my heart
Yet far from my eyes!
How can I help my eyes for being far?
For how can i help my eyes for its jealous of my heart!
For how can i help my eyes for its jealous of my heart!!

Happy reading!

Yours rumblingly!

Musings: Does hatred beget Strength?

Does Hatred beget strength?

Priority begets time
Time begets passion
Passion begets value
Value begets thoughts
Thoughts begets words
Words begets deeds
Deeds begets habits
Habits begets character
Character begets destiny
Character begets friends
Character begets foes
Friends beget emotions
Foes beget emotions
Friends beget love
Foes beget hatred
Hatred begets adversity
Adversity begets endurance
Endurance begets Experience
Experience begets learning
Learning begets strength
Experience begets strength
Endurance begets strength
Adversity begets strength
Hatred begets hatred
Hatred begets strength

Looks like hatred begets strength!

But,

Strength begets strength
Strength begets restraint
Restraint begets love
Love begets friends
Friends begets friends
Friends begets strength
Love begets strength !
Yes, Love begets strength !

Looks like this is an easier & pleasant option!

'coz friends are for lifefull !

(A brief attempt on a English poem. Surprisingly this is my first attempt and i wrote this in about 30 minutes)...
Preface:
Good & true friends, too fight and an element of misunderstanding creeps in. Both of them may miss and share the same feeling but one / both may refrain from taking the steps to resolve, may be because both may feel strongly that the other person was wrong. Here the one with stronger feeling is expressing it. The gender is immaterial, and you can replace "her" with "him", but choose the gender opposite to yours (assuming the world is straight) and it will sound sweeter!

I know her so well
She knows me so well
In our hearts we dwell
Ain’t sure where did it swell

Our minds were so blending
Tastes were so matching
Interests ever adding
Even when we were not meeting

We were not in a hurry
Nothing ever remotely awry
A special feeling we carry
Why should we feel sorry?

Life has been taxing
Gloom has been waxing
Smile has been waning
But she is still testing

Her beads so troubling
Her silence so killing
Mirrors aren’t accusing
But heart is still longing

Never did I envisage
Thoughts can form a cage
It’s a night of damage
Hmmmm, Life is a package

Even if you are all wise
There’s little bit of vice
No, not a tinge of malice
Never intend to be an accomplice

Cut off my wrong hand
And extend your right hand
Drag me from the quicksand
And take me to a highland

Disband your hair band
Switch over to broadband
You're stranded in an island
I am here, your homeland.

If you can understand
There nothing to reprimand
My heart is a wasteland
With you it’s a wonderland

Conference calls go on
Get togethers roll on
Happier moments come by
Yet, deep inside its lil' dry

Mind has been mailing
Heart has been calling
Hands have been texting
But a wall has been tenting

I don’t want to meet up
But I don’t want to break up
Need a one time catch up
To ease out the hiccup

Love me for what I am
Scold me for what I am
Kick me for what I am
Hate me for what I am
But never leave me for what I am

She isn’t playful
Efforts aren’t fruitful
Life isn’t beautiful
It’s been so painful

I can be careful
But can’t be never sinful
I am still hopeful
‘coz friends are for lifefull
‘coz friends are for lifefull
